Dear Families and Friends,
Our final newsletter for Term 2 2020. What a term we have had. We can not thank you all enough for your continued support and patience. A huge Welcome Back to our Middle and Senior students who have now re-joined us. It was just wonderful to see you all and feel whole again. Everyone – students, staff, parents and friends have done an amazing job, we have continued to focus on joy, rekindling friendship and enjoying the many simple pleasures we have once again.
If you have any concerns or queries please do not hesitate to call.
We will, as always, continue to follow the directives of Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) who are working with the Chief Health Officer and Department of Education and Training.
During the first term our school community has been busy researching, reading and naming our groups within each hub. So far our hubs have decided on:
Wurun and Djeri
Wurundjeri people have lived on Footscray land for a long time. The Wurundjeri People take their name from the Woiwurrung language word ‘wurun’ meaning the Manna Gum and ‘djeri‘, the grub which is found in or near the tree.
Yr 1/2 Groups
Walert, Marram and Waa
In our 1/2 Hub we have decided to name our spaces after the Australian animals found in our local area. To pay respect to the Wurundjeri people we have used the Woiwurrung language to name these animals. We have Walert meaning possum, Marram meaning Kangaroo and Waa representing the crow for one of the moiety ancestors.
Yr 3/4 Hub
Bunjil and Maribrynong
In Australian Aboriginal mythology, Bunjil is a creator deity, culture hero and ancestral being, often depicted as a wedge-tailed eagle (or eaglehawk). In the Kulin nation in central Victoria he was regarded as one of two moiety ancestors, the other being Waa the crow.
Maribyrnong is a version of the Aboriginal term ‘Mirring-gnay-bir-nong’, which translates as ‘I can hear a ringtail possum’. Where the Maribyrnong and Yarra Rivers join was an especially important place as it symbolised the joining of groups who would travel along the river.
You may hear your child/ren talk about their group and the different ways of belonging to this group.
Yr 5/6 Hub
Our 5/6 hub is in ‘motion’ literally as our Church will be transformed into our school hall, OSHClub and gathering place. Our 5/6 hub will become the previous hall – this space will include a maker space for discovery projects. The kitchen will remain to ensure our ‘older’ children have a greater sense of responsibilities and independence. We hope to launch both spaces by Term 4 2020.
MORNINGS & DROP OFF ZONES
Our drop off / pick up zones will exist into next term and most likely for the year. For Term 3 at least – we will only have children and staff within the school gates. We may move to parents inside the gates in Term 4 however not within classrooms – this will lessen the amount of people within each area and the cross touch of several items such as door handles etc.
Thank you for all your support and organisation each morning. Our children are arriving at school in the allocated times and we are VERY impressed with the calmness of the learning areas. Children have settled into each day with a greater sense of independence and ownership. This change has allowed for learning to begin on time and our children have managed the organisation aspect extremely well.
Morning drop offs – you will begin to see less ‘staff’ presence at every gate, however we will have the duty person on Joan’s yard and staff allocated to the backyard. Regardless of staff at gates – PLEASE ENSURE YOU DROP AT THE CORRECT GATE AND THE CORRECT TIME. Please also ensure that you turn left when exiting the Back Yard, this is a council directive to ensure we maintain as smooth a traffic flow as possible. This will help the ‘flow’ and safety of all. We thank you all in advance.
As the term draws to a close we are grateful for the opportunity to once again be together as a community in these final weeks of the term.
Online Prayer Gathering
We will be hosting a Prayer Gathering online tomorrow, Friday 19th June at 2pm. A link to a live stream will be shared via FlexiBuzz tomorrow morning. We will be focusing on the story of the Good Samaritan and how we are tasked with taking action to help all. You are very welcome to join us in a virtual sense!
Way of the West Planner 2020
A reminder that in our last newsletter we explained that we would be launching our Social Justice project which aims to collect food and winter wear to donate to Way of the West. Below you will see the types of items we are hoping to collect. Donations can be placed in the boxes we will have in each home group space. We have listed some of the items that are most needed at this time but we know that any donations will be very much appreciated. We have also added a short video to the Faith Gathering page to share our project idea. Thank you for your support!

Social Justice Leaders
Dear St John’s families,
Bookings are now open for the Winter School Holidays at St John’s OSHClub Footscray.
Please find attached the flyer outlining all the exciting in-service activities on offer each day. Our educators have prepared a program for our families that’s jam-packed each day with structured activities including indoor and outdoor play. Our heightened focus on safety and hygiene means we will not be running excursions, or bringing in incursion providers these school holidays.
You will see the attached flyer displays the daily fee (before any applicable Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is applied). Please note that the current funding package that provides for ‘free care’ has been extended to 12th July 2020 which means there will be no cost for any care up to and including this date.
As CCS will recommence from 13th July 2020, we recommend that you check your enrolment in MyGov to ensure you receive all your CCS entitlements. If you have any questions about CCS or how to apply, please refer to the Services Australia website here.
To secure your child’s place it’s as easy as logging into your online account here and making your bookings.
