Dear family and friends of St John’s,

Wow what a busy few weeks we have had.  It was beautiful to see so many faces at our beginning of the year picnic and Welcome to Country ceremony.  This is always such a special night full of chatter, music, art and blessing of the land we are so very thankful to learn upon.  Thank you Angela and Aoife for your extra organisation and to all our Educators for preparing the learning spaces and ‘getting to know each other’ activities. The structure and routines were explained on the night however we encourage families to seek further clarification if needed.

Our building has begun in the 1/2 area – 2 small target teaching areas are currently being created, these areas will be utilised for small class teaching groups. It gives a space for children to focus on their learning goals with a teacher away from the ‘busy’ project environments.

We can’t wait for the below excursions, as both intend to immerse children and adults into learning and experiencing the ways of the Wurundjeri people. Thank you to all the parents that are able to join to make both possible.

  • P-2: Nature play the Wurundjeri Way – Tuesday 17th March – full day excursion
  • 3-6: Bullen Bullen Wurundjeri Walking Tour and activities – Wednesday 11th March – full day excursion.

We keep Lisa, her husband Ben and their children in our prayers,  as Lisa’s father-in-law passed away suddenly last week. May you find peace and comfort in togetherness and love.

Term 1 is flying by, please remember to check the calendar for up and coming closure days and other important events such as Cross country sports.

Faith News

Prayer Gathering – Friday 28th Feb, 2:45 pm.

We will be gathering as a community on Friday afternoon, led by Home Group Angela, who will guide us in reflection on the concept of forgiveness. We are surrounded by many examples of forgiveness, yet it can be one of the hardest gifts to give to others, as well as to ourselves. You are very welcome to join us if you’re available.

Sacramental Evening – Thursday 5th March, 5:30 pm

Some of our Year 3 children will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of Eucharist this year. As part of the preparation for these special ceremonies we will be gathering together to reflect on what these sacraments mean for us. Please keep Angus, Xavier, Sebastian, Bosco, Bella, Manoj, James, Adut, Nikola, Kayla, Caleb and their families in your prayers.

Lent

We celebrated the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday Mass this week. Fr Rene chatted with the children about the ashes being a visible sign of the commencement of a time of reflection, prayer and almsgiving. Lent lasts for 40 days, excluding Sundays, and will end on Easter Sunday when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

Save the Date! Josephite Mass

We will be celebrating the contribution of the Josephite Sisters to our community on 24th March at 6:30 pm. We welcome all families to join us in thanks. Further details will be in the next newsletter.

Social Justice Leaders

Thank you to everyone who participated in placing their thumb on our social justice scales at the Welcome Picnic last week. We designed the artwork to represent us as a school community and to show that we are committed to making a difference to others. Throughout Lent we will be supporting Caritas through their Project Compassion fundraiser. Collection boxes will be in each classroom and at the office if you’d like to donate, all donations will be appreciated. Please visit https://lent.caritas.org.au/#blank to find out more about the difference that Caritas makes to people in Australia and in other countries around the world.

Thank you for your support.

Farm update

A big thank you to our families who helped to look after our farm over the holidays, our produce has survived thanks to your watering and weeding.
Just a note that during term time could we leave the harvesting and egg collection to our students, please.  We use the produce to harvest and cook and if we don’t eat the eggs they are sold and the money goes towards future activities at the farm.
If you have purchased our eggs, could you return our special St John’s egg cartons to the school please.
Many thanks

Sport

A huge congratulations to the children who took part in the District Swimming event last Friday. With the smell of chlorine in the air and butterflies in the tummy, the students gave their best efforts in the water and left the day with big smiles on their faces.

Good luck to the children who qualified for the Division Swimming held on the 18th March and from all the St John’s community we wish you well.

Thank you to everyone who took part on the great day and to anyone who was able to come down and support.
