2020 Term 1 Week 5

Dear family and friends of St John’s,

Wow what a busy few weeks we have had.  It was beautiful to see so many faces at our beginning of the year picnic and Welcome to Country ceremony.  This is always such a special night full of chatter, music, art and blessing of the land we are so very thankful to learn upon.  Thank you Angela and Aoife for your extra organisation and to all our Educators for preparing the learning spaces and ‘getting to know each other’ activities. The structure and routines were explained on the night however we encourage families to seek further clarification if needed.

Our building has begun in the 1/2 area – 2 small target teaching areas are currently being created, these areas will be utilised for small class teaching groups. It gives a space for children to focus on their learning goals with a teacher away from the ‘busy’ project environments.

We can’t wait for the below excursions, as both intend to immerse children and adults into learning and experiencing the ways of the Wurundjeri people. Thank you to all the parents that are able to join to make both possible.

  • P-2: Nature play the Wurundjeri Way – Tuesday 17th March – full day excursion
  • 3-6: Bullen Bullen Wurundjeri Walking Tour and activities – Wednesday 11th March – full day excursion.

We keep Lisa, her husband Ben and their children in our prayers,  as Lisa’s father-in-law passed away suddenly last week. May you find peace and comfort in togetherness and love.

Term 1 is flying by, please remember to check the calendar for up and coming closure days and other important events such as Cross country sports.

Faith News

Prayer Gathering – Friday 28th Feb, 2:45 pm.

We will be gathering as a community on Friday afternoon, led by Home Group Angela, who will guide us in reflection on the concept of forgiveness. We are surrounded by many examples of forgiveness, yet it can be one of the hardest gifts to give to others, as well as to ourselves. You are very welcome to join us if you’re available.

Sacramental Evening – Thursday 5th March, 5:30 pm

Some of our Year 3 children will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of Eucharist this year. As part of the preparation for these special ceremonies we will be gathering together to reflect on what these sacraments mean for us. Please keep Angus, Xavier, Sebastian, Bosco, Bella, Manoj, James, Adut, Nikola, Kayla, Caleb and their families in your prayers.

Lent

We celebrated the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday Mass this week. Fr Rene chatted with the children about the ashes being a visible sign of the commencement of a time of reflection, prayer and almsgiving. Lent lasts for 40 days, excluding Sundays, and will end on Easter Sunday when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

Save the Date! Josephite Mass

We will be celebrating the contribution of the Josephite Sisters to our community on 24th March at 6:30 pm. We welcome all families to join us in thanks. Further details will be in the next newsletter.

Social Justice Leaders

Thank you to everyone who participated in placing their thumb on our social justice scales at the Welcome Picnic last week. We designed the artwork to represent us as a school community and to show that we are committed to making a difference to others. Throughout Lent we will be supporting Caritas through their Project Compassion fundraiser. Collection boxes will be in each classroom and at the office if you’d like to donate, all donations will be appreciated. Please visit https://lent.caritas.org.au/#blank to find out more about the difference that Caritas makes to people in Australia and in other countries around the world.

Thank you for your support.

Farm update

A big thank you to our families who helped to look after our farm over the holidays, our produce has survived thanks to your watering and weeding.
Just a note that during term time could we leave the harvesting and egg collection to our students, please.  We use the produce to harvest and cook and if we don’t eat the eggs they are sold and the money goes towards future activities at the farm.
If you have purchased our eggs, could you return our special St John’s egg cartons to the school please.
Many thanks

Sport

A huge congratulations to the children who took part in the District Swimming event last Friday. With the smell of chlorine in the air and butterflies in the tummy, the students gave their best efforts in the water and left the day with big smiles on their faces.

Good luck to the children who qualified for the Division Swimming held on the 18th March and from all the St John’s community we wish you well.

Envision Hands – our community contribution

Envision Hands is a not-for-profit community initiative that uses 3D printing to turn plastic waste into mechanical hands and arms for kids, with the products being sent around the world.

Harry and his little sister (with a little help from Mum, Louise) delivered the bottle tops collected by our families at St John’s to Envision Hands in Werribee.  They met Joe, who designs the hands and got to see the process of sorting, shredding and how they turn the lids into a plastic filament used by 3D printers.

Envision Hands have now achieved their target for lid collection so are asking people to hold off collecting for now.

Thank you Harry, and your family, for helping those less fortunate than ourselves through sustainable initiatives like that of Envision Hands – well done!

Changes to School Banking Rewards Program for 2020
Dear Parents,
For those who are participating in the School Banking Program, please note the changes below regarding the Rewards Program.
The purpose of the Rewards Program is to reward good savings behaviour. For every deposit the student makes, the automated reward token tracking system will add one electronic reward token to the student’s profile. A physical Dollarmites token will no longer be handed out.  Students can also track their progress on the CommBank Youth app (commbank.com.au/youthapp).
Each reward item is valued at 10 electronic reward tokens.  Students who are eligible to redeem a reward will receive a reward redemption slip in their deposit wallet to choose a reward.
Please note that we are currently waiting on new reward redemption slips which includes new items for 2020.
If you would like to learn more about the Rewards Program or participate in School Banking, please visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking.

Thank you!
Kind regards,
Jill

2020 Term 1

Dear Families and Friends of St John’s,

Welcome to 2020 and the beginning of a new school year.

I pray that everyone has had a refreshing and safe break and you are feeling excited about the coming year.

A special welcome to our new Prep families and to those who join us in other levels. I know that our caring community will be extending a warm welcome to each and every one.

We also welcome new staff members  Jarryd, Dana, Stevie, Linda & Jayka.

Our theme for 2020 comes from our horizon words Inclusion and Dynamic Learning.

Our Professional learning for all staff will focus around this theme.

2020 Assemblies and Prayer Gatherings

This year we invite you to join us at Assembly and in Prayer. Assemblies will be held every fortnight at 2:30 pm on ‘even’ weeks of the school term. Our first assembly will be held this Friday, 7th February. Assemblies will be led by our School Captains and are an opportunity to share announcements, acknowledgements and birthdays.

Prayer Gatherings will be held on ‘odd’ weeks of the school term, beginning on Friday 14th February, at 2:45 pm. Prayer Gatherings are a time for our community to come together in a sacred space. Each Home Group will lead a Prayer Gathering throughout the year. Children will have an opportunity to design and lead our community in prayer.

The dates and times of Assemblies and Prayer Gatherings will be listed in the newsletter each fortnight, along with which Home Group will be leading the Gathering. We look forward to welcoming you throughout the year.

Welcome Picnic and Family Chats

Dear Families,

We are having Family Chats and a Welcome Picnic at St. John’s on Thursday, 20th February from 5pm – 7pm to welcome you all to a new year at St John’s.

This year’s chats are taking a different format to past years. All families are invited to meet in their child’s home group space from 5pm – 5.30pm to meet with the educator and other families. This is a great opportunity to strengthen community relationships and make new connections with one another. Families with more than one child at school are invited to divide their time between each home group.

From 5.30pm – 7pm we will gather as a whole school community. We will provide entertainment and water (please bring reusable drinking cups for your family #sustainability). Please bring a picnic blanket and your own #nude picnic (let’s work TOGETHER to reduce our carbon footprint).

The event will conclude with a Welcome to County and a Smoking Ceremony performed by an elder of the Wurundjeri community.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Angela Flint

On behalf of the St John’s staff
