2019 Term 3 Week 9

Week 7

Dear Families and Friends of St John’s Community,

It is that time of year again – NAPLAN results. I know we say each year Naplan is one piece of the pie and we have MANY MANY data sets that are triangulated to ensure we are aware of children’s growth, progression needs, targeted needs, school trends etc etc. In saying that, our school once again received extremely pleasing Naplan results for those who have asked and requested some information. Reading, Writing, Grammar/Punctuation, Numeracy once again exceeded the state and National growth difference from Year 3 to Year 5. I congratulate all involved in this learning growth.

Our major focus is always on children’s growth and together we made a very significant one.  Please do not hesitate to contact the school for further information.

There certainly is a lot happening this term, our homegroup project ‘there’s a world in my nose’ is heavily focused on Geography, location, places and resources. This learning has led to exciting excursions – cooking (food around our globe), Organ Pipes National Park to see many landscapes and field studies around Footscray. The idea is for children to experience more than a map and really think deeper in how to identify where we are in the world through the language of smell. We are focused on the field study process for this homegroup project and we hope to see the learning of this process transferred to discovery projects (student led and initiated).

Our Atelier is focusing on perspectives through the language of photography – viewing many different angles and different values throughout our ‘place’. Photos allow us to frame small areas and look deeper into what we see and what we may not see.

We welcome Kelly Boaretto to St John’s Community in 2020 to fulfill the Japanese position. Kelly has been a Japanese teacher for many years, living in Tokyo for seven years returning to Australia in 2018.

I hope everyone has a great break over the September holidays and returns refreshed and ready for Term 4… Time flies when you’re having fun.

“Bringing Light to the Farm” Project

Update on “Bringing Light to the Farm” project with 3/4’s .
Last week we completed digging and used sticks to count out the number of rocks required.

Discovery Project Grade 3/4 Michele

Our project in Discovery is to bring the parrots into our school yard. This requires us to buy a tree that attracts parrots. To raise money we have made cookies in the shape of a parrot. They will be sold at recess from next Monday until the supply runs out. They will be 50 cents a cookie.
We would appreciate your support.
Thank you
Joanna, Kelly, Anh Van & Ashley (Grade 3/4 Michele)
