2019 Term 3 Week 1

Week 1

Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to Term 3, I hope you have enjoyed a restful break and as our Chloe said on the last day we hope you enjoyed  ‘an ice cream, a book and a day in your pj’s’.

Term 3 brings many scientists to the floor of St John’s. We will be exploring the world around us through a scientific inquiry… Watch this space…

We welcome Daniela De Luca to the Learning and Teaching Team and Numeracy Leadership role as Lauren heads off to take on Motherhood in Week 7. Daniela will begin Week 1 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to begin the handover process. Daniela has held Learning and Teaching, Literacy and Numeracy roles at St Martin de Porres – Laverton – we welcome her wealth of knowledge and depth of leadership.

Whilst Lien is on Long Service Leave Jenna and Jackie will be in Prep.

We CONGRATULATE our very own Jackie Schober in completing her Teaching degree and welcome her warmly to the role. It is such a privilege to be a teacher in today’s day and have the opportunity to work with amazing children and families. Enjoy the ride Jac. Jackie will be in Grade 3/4 each second Friday to release Michele and every other Friday in our 1/2 team to give Chevon greater opportunity in the Learning and Teaching role coaching and leading our approach.

Welcome Back Hayley Lee – in a moon boot – her broken foot has kept her away however she is keen to get back into action from Week 1. She may be a little slower than usual but will speed up over time. Welcome back – we have missed you.

Lesley has headed off to CCCC – we will be sending a family survey VERY soon to seek your opinion on St John’s language going into the future. This will guide our appointment process. We don’t want to rush this process. In the meantime Haley, Jess and Matt will be working through  ‘engaging with place’ at our farm for each year level. This focus will be on the Farm, sustainability and indigenous perspectives.

Have a great week,

Introducing Daniela

It was obvious to me from the moment I walked the grounds of your beautiful school that your children are the heart and soul of St John’s. I’m so very excited to work alongside the passionate staff here, in their efforts to ensure no child in our care is left behind. I have returned from maternity leave after having my darling son, Julian; brother to his older, vivacious sister, Vivienne. I am working alongside Lauren as a Learning and Teaching Leader and will take over the reigns of Numeracy leadership once she embarks on her own motherhood journey. I look forward to meeting and getting to know you all and thank you for making me feel so welcome into the St John’s family!

Faith News

Sacrament of Confirmation

Some of our Year Six children will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation this term. We keep them and their families in our prayers as they prepare to celebrate this special moment in their faith journey. The ceremony will take place on Friday 9th August at 6pm at Our Lady’s Church. All welcome.

Feast of Mary MacKillop – August 8th

We will celebrate the Feast day of Saint Mary MacKillop as a whole school on Thursday August 8th. We will reflect on our theme for this year ‘Find happiness in making others happy’. We will once again be supporting the Way of the West food collection in aid of the Asylum Seeker and Refugee Centre here in Footscray. A letter will be sent home to each family with further details of the food collection and our plans for the day.

Our whole school will gather to celebrate Mass at 11:30am on Thursday 15th August. You are warmly invited to join us in prayer if you are available.

What’s Buzzing?

We are very excited to come back to school for another full term of learning!

On the 28th of June, the 5/6 Teeball team competed in the district championships at Footscray West Primary School.

The Tee Ball team not only showed great sportsmanship on the day, but they won the finals, claiming the Tee Ball championship! The game was filled with encouragement, with St John’s lending a hand and helping to support the other team, despite being their competitors.

Interviewing the captain of the team, Aiden had this to say:

“It was very exciting… it was great to see everyone filled with joy even the other team. Even if I lost, I still would’ve been happy to be at the grand finals”.

Players Allegra and Milee were also elated with joy; “I felt amazing, really excited to win and overfilled with joy” Allegra said,  “I felt really nervous playing the game but was happy to be at the grand finals”.

“I felt proud, really excited, relieved from all the stress, it was really fun and stressful” said Milee.

We are very fortunate to have amazing inter-school sport teams and we would like to congratulate the Tee Ball team for making it to the finals, and representing St John’s.

Welcome to Term 3 at OSHCLUBMy name is Novita and I am the new OSHC Coordinator at St John’s. I have been working with children for 13 yearsI studied teaching and education at Swinburne University and I have a son who is now a grown-up young man! I began in the last two weeks of Term 2 and it has been such a great experience so far!

I am working together with Jasmyn, who has been working with OSHClub since the beginning of Term 2. She is currently on track to finish her teaching degree in a couple of months and I am really fortunate to have someone with her knowledge working alongside me.

This term, we will be introducing STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematicsprojects and incorporating elements of the curriculum into our program. We acknowledge that children of different ages have different interests and abilities, so we have planned two different experiences for the two main age groups we have at the program. For Preps – Grade 2, we will be setting up a STEM corner where the children will be able to make a robotic hand from cardboard as well as other projects. For the Grade 3-6’s we will be creating solar boats – which should be lots of fun! We will also have an exhibition at the end of Term where the children will be able to showcase what they have done throughout the term.

As always, please feel free to pass on any feedback or ideas to myself or Jasmyn – we would love to hear them! Looking forward to having a great Term 3 with all of your children

Looking for a home – 10 outdoor beanbags!
